Blood - Our Life Line

Updated: Oct 18, 2020

A short introduction on the heart and liver from the TCM perspective:

The heart’s brilliance is manifested in the face. The heart stores the “spirit”, rules the blood, blood vessels and maintains the nervous system’s functions. In general, the “spirit’ refers to a person’s vitality, reflected in the eyes, tongue, skin, speech, reactions and overall appearance. Specifically, the “spirit” refers to a person’s mental, cognitive and intellectual abilities. If the “spirit ruling” is good, the individual is wise and compassionate. The heart opens into the tongue, the face and tongue are the windows of the heart and blood.

By observing the tongue and face of an individual, a TCM practitioner can diagnose how the heart is function.

The liver promotes flowing and spreading movements. Flowing and spreading activities regulate qi/energy, emotions, body fluids and enhances the digestive properties of the spleen. Liver stores the blood. When a person moves, exercises or use the eyes, blood leaves the liver and goes to the part of the body that needs it. The blood returns to the liver to be stored, when a person rest. The liver opens into the eyes. Many liver disorders are reflected in the eyes. The ability to see depends on a person having sufficient blood available for storage in the liver, otherwise, their eyes will not be adequately nourished and will lead to inflamed, dry, blurred vision and if dampness and heat occurred due to insufficient sleep and frequent late nights, yellowing of the eyes will occur (golden sleeping hours 23:00 to 03:00).
